OCTOBER 25TH - WIMBLEBALL BOAT

Round 10 of the Snowbee Top Rod was at Wimbleball high on Exmoor and we were joined by 4 members of the CAST club who had driven up from Stithians in Cornwall.

After the washout of Saturday, the weather was kind to us and although the wind was a bit cold at times the weather stayed mainly dry with just a couple of light showers during the afternoon.

Temperature was barely 10 degrees in the gusty SW winds.

20 anglers made the trip and caught 40 fish for a bag weight of 109LBS 4OZ.

Average catch 2.0 and average weight was 2.72LBS.

5 anglers caught their 5 fish limit and 5 anglers failed to catch.

There were 3 fish caught over 5LBS.

Alan Riddell of Newton Abbot took the best fish of the day 5LBS 6OZ, Junior Alex Venn 5LBS 2OZ and Darren Penfold of Liverton 5LBS.

Fish were caught in all areas of the lake and best tactics were stripped lures on Intermediate or DI 3 lines.

SEPTEMBER 27TH KENNICK BANK

Due to the Exmoor swim being held at Wimbleball today and reservoir closed, Round 9 of the Snowbee Top Rod at Kennick was an additional date added to make up for lost competitions in April.

Strong NW winds and sunny skies were the order of the day, if you were fishing out of the wind it was nice in the sun, but in the shade it was cold.

11 anglers made the trip and the fish had the last laugh today with social distancing and took lock down to a new level.

11 anglers caught just 4 fish for a bag weight of 8lbs 1.5oz.

Average catch .36 and average weight was a fraction over 2lbs.

SEPTEMBER 13TH - BLAGDON BOAT - Fred Pike Memorial Trophy

Round 8 of the Snowbee Top Rod 2020 was at Blagdon Lake near Bristol Airport.

Weather was a beautiful sunny day for the time of year and temperatures around 22-25 degrees with light southerly winds.

14 anglers made the trip and caught fish in all areas of the lake.

14 anglers caught 85 fish for a bag weight of 191LBS 7OZ.

Average catch 6.07 fish and average weight was 2.26LBS.

Best fish of the day went to Chris Bolt of Kingsteignton with a fine rainbow of 4LBS 6OZ, picture below.

7 anglers caught their 8 fish limit.

SEPTEMBER 6TH - WIMBLEBALL BOAT

Round 7 of the Snowbee Top Rod 2020 was back at Wimbleball on Exmoor, weather was overcast with a few bright spells and a light to moderate NW wind.

During the morning the heavens opened and it poured down for 2 hours, waterproofs were well and truly tested!

The weather improved for the rest of the day with temperatures in the late teens.

11 anglers caught 25 fish for a bag weight of 64LBS.

Average catch 2.27 and average weight 2.56LBS.

Fish were caught mainly from Bessoms to the bridge and picnic bank into Ruggs.

Best tactics were floating lines with nypmhs and washing line tactics.

Best fish of the day were 2 x 3LBS 15OZ to Andy Gooding and Chris Bolt.

JULY 19TH - WIMBLEBALL BOAT

Round 6 of the Snowbee Top Rod 2020 was at Wimbleball on Exmoor, after an initial damp start on the drive up the clouds soon passed and the sun came out.

Wind was a light to moderate Northerly, temperature around 20 degrees and 9 anglers left the boat pontoon by 0930.

9 anglers caught 12 fish for a bag weight of 30.79LBS.

Average catch 1.33, average weight was 2.56LBS.

Best fish of the day went to Darren Penfold of Liverton with one of 4LBS 1OZ on his very first cast of the day!

4 anglers failed to catch any fish.

Fish were taken in all areas of the Reservoir but Ruggs and Cowmoor were the most productive areas with Diawl Bachs on a floater or orange blobs on an intermediate line being the best tactics.

JULY 5TH - CLATWORTHY BOAT

We were back in the boats at Clatworthy today high up on the Brendon Hills near Wiveliscombe for Round 5 of the Snowbee Top Rod.

Weather was mostly dry with the odd shower but with strong gusty westerly winds.

13 anglers made the trip and fished in all areas of the reservoir.

Best flies were Black and Green, White and Green with Orange Blobs also catching.

13 anglers caught 60 fish for a bag weight of 130LBS.

11 anglers caught their 5 fish bag limit.

Average catch 4.61

Average weight 2.17

JUNE 14TH - KENNICK BANK

Today saw our first competition at Kennick since the return to fishing a few weeks ago.

All competitiors followed guidelines issed by Angling Trust, SW Lakes and KFFA Club committee.

10 anglers made the trip for Round 4 of the Snowbee Top Rod on a mostly sunny day with SSW wind with temperature at 18 degs.

Fish were taken in all areas of the lake, with Forest Bay, Clampitts and Smithacott area producing the best bags.

Best flies were, Kennick Killer, Blobs, Diawl Bachs, Damsels and Boobies.

10 anglers caught 35 fish for a bag weight of 80LBS .5OZ.

Average catch was 3.5 and average weight was 2.28LBS.

5 fish caught were over 3LBS. Andy Watson of Bovey Tracey caught the biggest of the day at 3LBS 3OZ.

MARCH 15TH - HAWKRIDGE BANK

For Round 3 of the Snowbee Top Rod we were at Hawkridge Reservoir on the edge of the Quantock Hills in Somerset.

Weather on arrival was wet, light WNW winds and looking at the inlet into the reservoir the water was clouding up very quickly due to overnight heavy rain.

Despite the conditions, very wet underfoot, 10 anglers made the trip and had a successful day, we all finished early and back on the road by 1500.

10 anglers caught 48 fish for a bag weight of 103LBS 1.5OZ

Average catch was 4.8 and average weight was 2.14LBS

There were 9 bag limits of 5 fish.

Best fish of the day was 2lbs 8oz, caught by Alec Hoare and Darren Penfold.

MARCH 8TH - WIMBLEBALL BOAT

For the 2nd Round of the Snowbee Top Rod 2020 we were having our first boat competition of the year at Wimbleball, high up on Exmoor.

With a moderate Westerly wind of 20mph, plus a big wave at times we were lucky to get the boats out today.

We had a mix of sunshine and showers but when those heavy showers turned up the temperature dropped by a degree or 2.

Despite the conditions 14 anglers took part and caught 46 fish for a bag weight of 136LBS 8.5OZ

Average catch was 3.28 and average weight was 2LBS 15OZ

There were 8 bag limits and the best fish of the day went to Andy Gooding of Liverton - 5LBS 8OZ

Other notable fish were, Mike Steer of Bovey Tracey 4LBS 10OZ, Andy Watson of Bovey Tracey 4LBS 9OZ and Alex Venn Top Junior 4LBS 6OZ.

FEBRUARY 23RD - KENNICK BANK

Our first competition of the year for the Snowbee 2020 Top Rod series was at Kennick.

A cool showery start with moderate WNW winds blowing all day.

13 anglers made the trip and Tom Hendy cooked bacon rolls on arrival.

Kennick has been open for just over a week, the odd fish was seen rising.

Fish were caught in all areas of the lake with the only limit of the day coming from the West Bank by John Hern who managed to hook and land 2 fish on one cast.

WIMBLEBALL BOAT OCTOBER 27TH

For the final round of the Snowbee Top Rod 2019 we were at Wimbleball Lake up on Exmoor.

We were so lucky with the weather, with a sunny, dry day with a cool Northerly breeze.

14 anglers made the trip and with the clocks going back the previous night all boatrs were ready for an 0930 start.

14 anglers caught 52 fish for a bag weight of 158LBS 15OZ.

Average catch was 3.7 and average weight was 3LBS .05OZ

8 anglers caught their bag limit.

Fish were caught mostly in the Bessoms and Ruggs area of the reservoir.

Best fish of the day went to Alan Riddell of Newton Abbot with a fine Rainbow of 8LBS 6OZ, (pictured below)

Alec Hoare of Abbotskerswell had one 5LBS 13OZ 10 minutes before the end of the Competition.

Tom Hendy of Chudleigh took one of 4LBS 6OZ and John Hern of Exeter one of 4LBS.

We had a dry day with some sun with a cool northerly wind for Round 12 of the Snowbee Top Rod at Kennick.

Despite the recent rains the reservoir was still a few feet down.

11 anglers caught 17 fish for a bag weight of 35LBS 1.5OZ

Average catch 1.54 and average weight was 2.06LBS

Best fish of the day went to Andy Gooding - 2LBS 14OZ with Tom Hendy 2LBS 12OZ and Robert Gale 2LBS 11OZ

WIMBLEBALL BOAT - OCTOBER 6TH

We were lucky with the weather today for Round 11 of the Snowbee Top Rod event at Wimbleball on Exmoor.

With a gap in the low pressure systems we had a mostly dry day with some sunny spells in a moderate NW wind.

After recent rains the lake had risen a few inches over night making it tricky to get to the boats if your forgot your wellington boots!

Luckily Mike Steer of Bovey Tracey was giving the Firemans lift or similar to those not wanting to get their feet wet! Well done Mike!

15 Anglers caught 61 fish for a bag weight of 156LBS 4OZ.

Average catch was 4.06 and average weight was 2.56LBS

Biggest fish of the day went to Alan Riddell of Newton Abbot - 5LBS, there were many fish caught between 4-5lbs too.

8 Anglers caught their 5 fish limit.

DEVON v CORNWALL - KENNICK BANK SEPTEMBER 15TH

Today was our first Devon v Cornwall bank competition at Kennick, an idea that John Huckings and John Hern came up with 2 years ago.

On a hot day for the time of year, with light winds and temps in the mid 20's fishing proved tough.

Kennick is still just a foot or so down and with the water now cooling, one or 2 fish were on the surface but the majority were down deep.

9 Devon Anglers fished against 4 Cornish, so the rule states Devon's best 4 would be up against the Cornish 4.

Cornwall - 8 FISH for a bag weight of 14lbs 9oz

Devon - 7 FISH for a bag weight of 10lbs 14.5oz

Best bag of the day went to John Huckings Cornish Captain - 4 fish 7lbs 7.5oz

WIMBLEBALL BOAT - SEPTEMBER 1ST

Like the F1 season we were back after the summer break at Wimbleball on Exmoor for Round 10 of the Snowbee Top Rod 2019.

We were joined by members of the CAST Club of Stithians in Cornwall for the day.

Weather was a cooler 17 degrees with sun and some cloud and moderate WNW winds.

18 anglers fished and caught a total of 51 fish for a bag weight of 117 LBS 10OZ

Average catch 2.83 and average weight 2lbs 3oz

3 fish caught over 3lbs, Andy Gooding 3lbs 14oz, Darren Penfold 3lbs 7oz and Jeremy Summers 3lbs 6oz

Best fishing area was in the Dam area and Bessoms.

We had our best turnout of the season so far for a Club Competition today at Clatworthy in the Brendon Hills on the edge of Exmoor.

20 anglers made the trip with sunny skies, light winds and just a brief shower of rain in the afternoon.

The fish were free rising most of the day in all areas of the reservoir and taking beetles off the top.

20 anglers caught 77 trout for a bag weight of 251lbs.

Average catch 3.85 and average weight 3.25lbs.

14 anglers caught their 5 fish bag limit.

Best fish of the day went to Darren Penfold at 4lbs 8oz.

12 Anglers made the trip to Kennick for Round 6 of the Snowbee Top Rod 2019.

Weather was generally sunny but a cold Northerly wind pegged the temperatures back if you were in the shade.

12 Anglers using Floating Line only caught 28 fish for a bag weight of 51lbs 11oz.

Average catch 2.33 and average weight was 1.84lbs.

Biggest fish of the day 2lbs 14oz caught by Alan Riddell.

SUTTON BINGHAM BANK - APRIL 28TH

12 anglers made the trip to Sutton Bingham Reservoir close to Yeovil for Round 5 of the Snowbee Top Rod 2019.

Weather was cloudy with some sunny spells and a moderate NW wind with a temperature of 14 degrees.

For the first time in a long time all 12 anglers caught their bag limit of 5 fish by 1430 so an early finish was had by all.

12 anglers caught 60 fish for a bag weight of 136lbs 12oz.

Average catch was 5 fish per person and average weight was 2.28lbs

Biggest fish of the day went to Alec Hoare of Abbotskerswell with a Rainbow of 4lbs 8oz.

12 anglers made the trip to Hawkridge Reservoir on the edge of the Quantock Hills in Somerset for Round 4 of the Snowbee Top Rod.

Weather was generally cloudy in the morning with light SE winds and when the sun came out in the afternoon the temps reached 15 degrees.

12 anglers caught 49 fish for a bag weight of 119lbs 5.5oz.

Average catch was 4.08 and average weight was 2.43lbs.

7 anglers caught their 5 fish limit.

Best fish of the day went to Peter Brown of Brixham with a 4lbs 4oz Rainbow.

Sunny skies and a moderate SE wind was the order of the day for the 3rd Round of the Snowbee Top Rod 2019 at Wimbleball.

10 anglers made the trip and one of the pairs today was able to use the brand new Kennick Coulam Boat now on the lake and received the 50% for using it.

With strong winds forecast today, the boats were not permitted out on the lake, so we had to fish off the bank.

We had rain, sleet, hail and some sunshine but in chilly NW winds with a temp of 6 degrees.

14 anglers braved the conditions and having had a breakfast at Brewers Fayre in Exeter on the way had a great day.

14 anglers caught 43 fish for a bag weight of 110lbs 6oz.

Average catch 3.07 and average weight 2.56lbs.

8 anglers caught their 5 fish limit.

KENNICK BANK - FEBRUARY 24TH

14 anglers came along to the first event of the 2019 calendar and what a beautiful day to start the season off with.

Despite a foggy drive down the M5, once on the moor it was sunny skies and still conditions with a temperature of about 14 degs.

Kennick was of course full to the brim and having been open for a week, the fish were still in shoals in certain areas, the Narrows, Boat bay and into Clampitts fished the best.

14 anglers caught 44 fish for a bag weight 86lbs 15oz. Average catch was 3.14 and Average weight was a fraction under 2lbs.

6 Anglers caught their 6 fish limit.

Just 7 anglers braved the weather for Round 15 and last in the season of the Snowbee Top Rod event for 2018 at Kennick.

The weather was wet with heavy rain until 1100 then once it cleared through the wind dropped and the sun even made an appearance.

7 anglers caught 31 fish for a bag weight of 49lbs.

Average catch 4.4 and average weight 1.58lbs.

Last day of September for Round 14 of the Snowbee Top Rod and a there was a distinct chill in the air with a northerly breeze, mostly cloudy and just a short shower during the day.

The Temple Club from Bodmin were fishing against Kennick today so we were a group of 15, 10 Kennick v 5 Temple.

15 anglers caught 49 fish for a bag weight of 75LBS .5OZ.

Average catch 3.26 and average weight was 1.53LBS.

Kennick beat Temple on average catch and average weight caught. 3.9 average catch v 2.0 and 1.56LBS v 1.4LBS

3 anglers caught their 6 fish limit.

For the final boat competition of the 2018 season and round 13 of the Snowbee Top Rod we were at Chew Valley near Bristol.

Weather was a muggy 19 degrees with a moderate to strong SW wind with mostly cloudy skies.

14 anglers made the trip and caught an impressive 84 fish for a bag weight of 175lbs.

8 anglers caught ther bag limit of 8 fish.

Best fish of the day went to Steve Floyd who caught a 3lbs 8oz Rainbow, closely followed by John Hern with a 3lbs 7oz Rainbow.

Average catch was 6 fish per person and average weight was 2.08lbs.

Following the summer break we were back to Wimbleball for round 12 of the Snowbee Top Rod.

Conditions were ideal with a gentle variable breeze, sunny spells and a temperature of 20degs.

Fish were taken from all areas of the reservoir but the winning bag came from the top of the Upton Arm.

16 anglers caught 44 fish for a bag weight of 106lbs.

Average catch 2.75 and average weight was 2.41lbs.

On one of the warmest days of the year and with temperatures approaching 30 degs, we were out in the boats at Clatworthy.

Luckily there was a breeze which kept us a bit cooler than the shore.

14 anglers made the trip to Exmoor and we had a fantastic day.

14 anglers caught 63 fish for a bag weight of 133lbs. Average catch 4.5 and average weight was 2.1lbs.

This was our first trip back to Wimbleball since Mark Underhill of Rainbow Valley Trout Farm had taken over the lease from SW Lakes.

Weather forecast had been a doubt with the threat of thundery showers but we were lucky.

After initial showers while having breakfast at The George at Brompton Regis, the sun came out and with light winds made for a very pleasant day.

16 anglers caught 70 fish for a bag weight of 193lbs, average weight 2.75lbs and average catch was 4.4.

There were 13 full bags of 5 fish.

Best fish of the day went to Jeremy Summers with a Rainbow of 4lbs 8oz followed by 4lbs 4oz for Paul Wicks and John Hern.

On a warm sunny day with temps around 20 degs and light winds, 6 anglers made the trip to Sutton Bingham Reservoir just outside Yeovil.

Sutton Bingham is 142 acres and was constructed in 1955.

6 anglers caught 30 fish and for the first time that I can remember on a Club competition everyone bagged up by 4pm so we all left early!

Bag weight was 67lbs 4oz giving an average weight of 2.24lbs, average catch was 5 fish.

Stithians was a new venue for us today, 274 acre Reservoir just outside Redruth in Cornwall.

5 Kennick anglers made the trip to fish with the CAST club of Stithians.

Weather was a sunny and bright 13 degs with a cool wind.

5 anglers caught 14 fish for a bag weight of 15lbs 15oz.

Average catch 2.8 and average weight was 1.13lbs - Best fish of the day 1lbs 4oz Alan Riddell.

Weather was 10 degrees with light winds and mostly cloudy conditions.

After a huge breakfast at the Rock Hopper Cafe at Siblyback, we almost had to delay the start of the competition!

On probably the nicest day of the winter and what a difference from last Sunday, we had sunny skies and light winds.

On a cold frosty morning with temperatures below freezing, 14 anglers braved the conditions.

Once the sun came up and you were in a sheltered spot it was a beautiful day, if in the shade with the wind in your face it was a different story.

14 anglers caught 54 fish for a bag weight of 110lbs 4oz.

Average catch 3.85 and Average weight 2.04lbs.
